Dr. Gemechu Beyene

JSPS Postdoctoral Research Fellow, University of Kitakyushu

Dr. Gemechu Beyene Mekonnen is a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Kitakyushu. His research integrates life-cycle thinking with data-driven policy scenario analysis to address solid waste management challenges in resource-constrained settings. He has contributed to several peer-reviewed studies and international research initiatives aimed at advancing evidence-based environmental policy, interregional policy learning, and sustainable waste management solutions that integrate environmental protection, climate considerations, and public health priorities.
He has worked across academia, development, and humanitarian sectors for more than twelve years, contributing to a wide range of research and development projects related to waste management, water, sanitation, and environmental health in Ethiopia.
He received his PhD in Environmental Engineering from Osaka University, Japan. He also holds dual master’s degrees in Environmental Engineering and Public Health from Jimma University, Ethiopia. Dr. Gemechu brings an interdisciplinary perspective to waste management research and policy dialogues.
